Academic Allies

CPAR's Academic Allies Program connects Canadian students (primary and secondary level) with primary school students in Malawi through the Green Schools Network project. This program offers a unique opportunity for students to help students, and to make a meaningful impact in the world.

About Green Schools Network

The Green Schools Network (GSN) is a collection of primary schools with improved vegetative cover that, together, create a greener and healthier Malawi.

The Green Schools Network is a multi-dimensional program focused on improving access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene services, and nutrition in rural Malawi. By addressing critical challenges faced by students in Malawi, such as contaminated water, irrigation problems and decreased crop production, the GSN program directly supports improved health and educational outcomes for primary students (age 6-15).

Funding permitted, the project involves the construction of essential infrastructure including rainwater harvesting tanks, latrines, changing rooms, and handwashing stations. It promotes sustainable agriculture practices, establishes school gardens, and provides garden tools and seeds (fruit, vegetables and trees) to combat nutritional deficiencies.

The project also facilitates lessons on safe sanitation and hygiene behaviors, including menstrual hygiene management.
