Malawi is a small independent republic with a democratic government. It lies south of Tanzania and to the west of Mozambique.

Currently, Malawi faces many challenges including, rapid population growth, a high HIV & AIDS infection rate (about 14.9 percent), limited natural resources, and environmental degradation. Malawi is currently one of the least developed countries in the world.

In 1990, CPAR was invited by the Malawian government to work with communities in the country's central and northern regions.

Natural Resource Management - community-based drought preparedness; soil and water conservation; community nurseries and wood lots.
Food Security - sustainable intensification of agriculture through crop diversification, drought-proofing, fish-farming and agroforestry.
Water and Sanitation - constructing deep drilled wells, protected shallow wells latrines and hand-washing facilities; promoting sanitation and hygiene education.

Water Flows Again at Msindu

The situation was critical. In 1998, the pump broke down and water stopped flowing for an entire year. Replacement parts were only available in Mzuzu – located three hours away – a fact that was not very encouraging because there was no money for transport. Community members would now have to walk an extra four miles each day just for clean water.

Unfortunately, this is not a rare situation. One third of Malawi’s borehole wells need rehabilitation or repair.

Now, hope has come to Msindu. The well has pump has been repaired and water is flowing again.

In partnership with UNICEF, CPAR Malawi’s WASHE (Water, Sanitation and Health Education program) program has rehabilitated more than 24 wells in the Nkhata Bay area. The Msindu well is one of these.

Water committee chair Alec Phiri explains, “water means life to our community”. Alec’s water committee will ensure that there are funds for future repairs and the local hardware store now stocks replacement parts. This sustainable solution is one that CPAR has always employed in its water and sanitation work and will help prevent situations such as small repairs from being out of reach of local communities.

Watch the video to see how the Msindu well was repaired and meet the community members.
